ARTS & CRAFTS COURSES 2009/10

 

 

11)  PATCHWORK

Tutor: Leila Le Messurier

Two separate courses, exploring different techniques and designs of patchwork.  Advice on materials and equipment will be given on enrolment.  Both courses held on Thursdays from 7.15 pm to 9.15 pm, at St Martin’s Community Centre.

(i)       Quilt as you go:  Japanese folded patchwork for had stitchers; frayed-edge bricks/blocks for machine stitchers.  Both will make small easy-to-handle pieces to join together to make a larger quilt.

8 sessions on Thursdays, commencing 08 October 2009.

      Fee £62.

(ii)  Medallion quilt:  A central design framed with alternate borders of sashing and pieced blocks, to make a table cover or bedspread.

       10 sessions on Thursdays, commencing on 14 January 2010.

       Fee £62.

12)  DRAWING FOR ALL

Tutor: John White

Two structured drawing courses, developing observational skills and incorporating a variety of techniques and materials.

Both courses held on Fridays, 9.30 am to 11.30 am, at the Castel Douzaine Room.

(i)    Pencil, charcoal and coloured pencil

       8 sessions commencing 09 October 2009.

       Fee £62

(ii)   Pencil, chalk pastels, and pen and ink

       8 sessions commencing 15 January 2010.

       Fee £62

 

13)  HAND EMBROIDERY

Tutor: Susanne White

Three separate courses, enabling you to produce individual work to be proud of.  Advice on materials and equipment will be given on enrolment.  Each held from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm, at The Studio, Fairmount, Rue du Dos D’Ane, Castel.

(i)    Exploring the uses of Cretan stitch:  Creating and developing work using the diversity of just one stitch technique, in many different ways and using a wide variety of threads and materials.

       8 sessions on Tuesdays, commencing on 20 October 2009.

       Fee £84

(ii)  Traditional Indian embroidery as a resource for pattern work:  A further course based on traditional Indian stitches and techniques, using very diverse resources and developing a very different embroidery.

       6 sessions on Mondays, commencing on 08 January 2010.

       Fee £63

(iii)  Mommigami    Paper and stitch:  An experimental course exploring the characteristics and qualities of paper as a surface to stitch into.

       6 sessions on Mondays, commencing on 22 February 2010.

       Fee £63.

14)  ONE-DAY CRAFT WORKSHOPS

Tutor: Jenny Mahy

No previous experience is necessary for any of the craft workshops.

Workshops (i) to (vi) held on Saturdays from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm at the Vale Douzaine Room.

Workshop (vii) will be held at the Vale Douzaine Room on Saturday 05 June 2010 from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm, and on Saturday, 12 June 2010 from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm.

(i)    Darned winter landscape:  Simple hand-stitching and layered fabrics to create a small winter landscape picture.

       Saturday 24 October 2009 (repeated 27 February 2010    see course (v) below).

       Fee:  £32

(ii)   Folded patchwork box:  Create a small box using folded fabrics and simple stictching.

       Saturday 21 November 2009.

       Fee:  £32

(iii)  Christmas elves and pixies:  Combining clay modelling and stitching to create a little pixie for Christmas decoration.

       Saturday 12 December 2009.

       Fee:  £32

(iv)  Felt brooch:  Create a brooch with simple manipulation and hand-sewing on ready-made felt.

       Saturday 23 January 2010.

       Fee:  £32

(v)   Darned winter landscape: Simple hand-stitching and layered fabrics to create a small winter landscape picture (repeat).

       Saturday 27 February 2010.

       Fee:  £32

(vi) Russian icons:  Metallic papers and machine stitching used to create a small picture resembling an ancient Russian icon.

       Saturday 27 March 2010.

       Fee:  £32

(vii) ‘Nunu’ felt notebook cover:  A two-day workshop creating a piece of ‘nunu’ felt, using fabric and wool tops, embellishing the felt and creating a notebook cover.

       Saturday 05 June 2010, 10.00 am - 4.00 pm, and Saturday 12 June 2010, 10.00 am - 1.00 pm, at the Vale Douzaine Room.

15)  GUERNSEY BONNETS

Tutor: Annette Creery

Come along and learn how to make a traditional Guernsey bonnet for either an adult, child or a baby.  A list of materials will be supplied on enrolment.

3 Saturday mornings, commencing 30 January 2010, 9.30 am - 12.00 noon, at St Martin’s Community Centre.

Fee £37.

16)  BASIC CALLIGRAPHY

Tutor: Stella Graham

Basic Calligraphy for card-making and scrap-booking, progressing to illuminated letters using ink and gouache.

4 sessions on Fridays, 7.30 pm ‑ 9.00 pm, at St Martin’s Community Centre, commencing 05 March 2010.

Fee £26.
