35) MYTH CONCEPTIONS: FACT AND FACTION IN THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE AND RELIGION

Tutor:  Dr. Robert Harnish

Exploring misunderstandings about the nature of the relationship between Western Science and Christian Theology.  Figures as diverse as Plato and Aristotle, Augustine and Aquinas, Bacon and Descartes, Columbus and DaVinci, will be read as a background for a reconsideration of the works of Galileo, Newton and Einstein.  Members will be encouraged to participate in discussion and debate concerning the roles of science and religion in contemporary culture.

8 sessions on Tuesdays, 7.30 p.m. - 9.00 p.m., at Elizabeth College, commencing on 07 October 2008.

36)  EXTREME TRAVELS

Another series of stories to inspire you from adventurous Guernsey residents on their expeditions, travels and lives in many parts of the world.

(i)   The road to Mandalay:  Gillian Tidd  –  A journey through Burma, giving insights into the background of events in this oppressed and secretive country.

(ii)  Marathon des Sables:   Dr Steve Evans  –  A six-day endurance race across the Sahara Desert.

(iii) The Falklands:  Robert Titterington  –  A history and guide to these faraway islands.

(iv) Tibet:  Jane Wilson  –  A journey through western Tibet.

(v)  Chad:  Brian Pill  –  A Bush Pilot gives an aerial view of living and working in the diverse landscape of this former French colony.

(vi)  Uganda:  Tim Peet  –  Looking at the changes over the past forty years in culture and political history, with a medical perspective.

6 sessions on Wednesdays, 7.30 pm – 9.00 pm, at Les Cτtils Centre
