Looking at the parish of St Martin’s contribution to Guernsey’s history.

A circular walk from Cobo, hearing about millionaires (0s) and churches (Xs), and looking at buildings dating back as far as the 8th century, as well as other treasures.

Hear about local characters and folklore while walking along the cliffs from Icart to Saints, and back through country lanes.

20)  GUERNSEY’S ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES AND MONUMENTS RECORD

Speaker:  Tania Walls, Assistant Archaeologist, Guernsey Museum

An introduction to the Guernsey Museum’s Sites and Monuments Record, covering 10,000 BC to the present day, showing the kind of information recorded, how to access and use it, and discover the richness of Guernsey’s archaeological and historical heritage.

21)  ECONOMIC VIEWPOINTS OF GUERNSEY

Chaired by: Roy Bisson

This course seeks to communicate the essence of Guernsey’s economy, expressing different viewpoints from year to year.  Having recently considered the ‘Human Economy’, the ‘Export Economy’, and last year the ‘Internal Economy’, the 2009 course will consider the ‘Big Issues’ –  population control. diversification, housing ownership, industrial development, education and transport    all from an economic viewpoint, in a series of presentations and debated.

8 sessions on Tuesdays, 7.30 pm9.30 pm, at La Villette Hotel, St Martin’s.

22)  TRADITIONALLY GUERNSEY

A series of talks, looking at some of the things which have made Guernsey what it is today.

6 sessions on Tuesdays, 7.30 pm - 9.00 pm, at St Martin’s Community Centre.

Commencing 27 January 2009.

(i)   The Guernsey Cow:  Bill Luff, Secretary of the World Guernsey Cattle Federation.

(ii)  The Guernsey Tom:  Peter Brahaut, social historian.

(iii) The Golden Guernsey Goat:  Peter Girard and Caroline Drewitt, goat owners.

(iv) Guernsey French:  Dr Harry Tomlinson, former Chief Librarian, Priaulx Library, and author of A Descriptive Grammar of Guernsey French.

(v)  Costume:  Gillian Lenfestey, Costume Curator, National Trust of Guernsey.

(vi)  Food:  Marguerite Paul, author of local cookery books.

23)  THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN GUERNSEY AND JERSEY HOUSES

Speaker:  John McCormack, Secretary of La Société Guernesiaise Historic Buildings Section, historian and author, will lead you through the many differences in plan, construction and features of medieval houses in Guernsey and Jersey.
